The Department of Economics at 168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ (168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ) is housed within the School of Business and Economics (SBE) and stands as one of the pioneering departments of the university, established in 1992. Over the years, the department has grown into one of the most prestigious and research-active economics departments in Bangladesh. Known for its academic excellence, the department combines rigorous theoretical foundations with empirical tools to prepare students for dynamic careers in research, policy-making, and industry.
About the Department
The Department of Economics at 168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ comprises 34 full-time faculty members, of whom 20 are Ph.D.-qualified. All the faculty members have earned their degrees from top-ranked universities across the globe. The department is recognized for its strong commitment to both research and teaching excellence. Faculty members actively engage in cutting-edge research while ensuring high-quality instruction, enabling students to gain both theoretical and practical expertise in economics. Beyond classroom teaching, the department fosters a vibrant research culture through its bi-weekly Brown Bag Seminar Series, where distinguished researchers from renowned academic and research institutions present their research work.
The department offers a diverse range of courses tailored to students’ specific academic interests and career aspirations. Moreover, a significant number of our alumni have been accepted into top-tier universities in the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia for higher studies. The department is deeply committed to student engagement and co-curricular development. Its flagship student organization, the Young Economists Forum (YEF), is one of the most active and prestigious student-led economics clubs in the country. YEF regularly organizes seminars, panel discussions, competitions, and networking events featuring esteemed economists, policymakers, and industry experts. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of other co-curricular and extra-curricular student clubs across 168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ, catering to diverse interests and skills development. To supplement theoretical learning, students have access to state-of-the-art university computing facilities equipped with statistical software such as EViews, Stata, and R, which aid in empirical research and analysis. Academic Programs
The Department of Economics at 168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ offers the following degree programs:
Additionally, students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree can choose to major in Economics. The BS in Economics program includes three distinct curricular streams tailored to different cohorts of students: students enrolled before the Summer 2015 semester, students enrolled between the Summer 2015 and Fall 2018 semesters, and students enrolled in the Spring 2019 semester and onwards. Each of these streams follows a specific curriculum designed to ensure a comprehensive and contemporary economics education that aligns with evolving industry and academic requirements.
A limited number of Teaching Assistantships are available for highly qualified students. The value of the assistantship may cover most part of the tuition at 168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ. 168 ÐÒÔË·Éͧ also offers both full and half-tuition waivers to at least 5% of its students.

The department currently offers the following undergraduate programs:
NOTE FOR STUDENTS: IF NOT WAIVED, ENG 102 AND BUS 112 HAVE TO BE TAKEN. THESE ARE CREDIT COURSES SINCE THE 101 AND 112 BATCHES RESPECTIVELY. BEN 205 AND HIS 103 ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL STUDENTS FROM THE 163 BATCH. NO REPLACEMENT IS ALLOWED.
BBA with a major in Economics: Along with all the other requirements of the BBA degree as stated in the BBA curriculum, a student planning to do BBA with a major in Economics needs to complete four required courses ECO 201, ECO 204, ECO 328 (or ECO 415), and ECO 348 (previously called ECO 349) and two elective courses in economics (total 18 credits).
The Department currently offers the MS in Economics program scheduled in the evenings and weekends, and the MDS program between Thursday evening and Saturday evening.
